Practice Innovations
Global pressure injury (PI) data reveal that hospital-acquired pressure injuries (HAPI) remain a substantial burden, with over one in ten hospitalized adults being affected1. PI are defined as an injury to the skin resulting from intense and/or prolonged pressure, or due to a combination of pressure and shear2. The purpose of this quality improvement (QI) project is to describe the impact of using PI incidence data to support pressure injury prevention (PIP) protocol development and to validate the clinical and economic outcomes of the Value Analysis Team’s (VAT) decision.
Methods:
Participants in VATs consider a variety of factors including clinical outcomes, product quality and comparisons, financial analysis, and education3. Nurses specialized in wound care develop and implement protocols that utilize these products for PIP. For continued QI, the assessment, documentation, and reporting of PI incidence by wound nurses contributes to ongoing monitoring of the efficacy of interventions. From 2012 to present, monthly PI incidence was captured for all inpatients in a 300-bed regional community hospital. Regular analysis and dissemination of this data by the wound nurse to hospital leadership and the VAT was conducted.
Results:
PI incidence data collected from 2012 to present reveal the impact of product selection on monthly HAPI incidence. The data demonstrates the fluctuations in PI incidence throughout the sequential use of three different soft silicone multi-layered foam dressing brands*. Sharing of the data has led to hospital leadership and VAT support for investments in soft silicone multi-layered foam dressings* as part of the broader PIP protocol.
Discussion:
Routine monitoring HAPI incidence data can support early identification of trends so that modifications to protocols and products may be made. Sharing of HAPI incidence data with leadership and VAT can increase buy in and support for PIP efforts.
